The Waters 2795 Separations Module delivers high throughput sample separation capabilities for the in-vitro analysis of many compounds. This makes it most useful for flow injection mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS), though it is best equipped for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This instrument integrates both solvent management and sample management systems to provide critical separation functions of traditional HPLC systems.

The solvent management system for the Waters 2795 draws solvent from its reservoir bottles to create a flow path. A serial flow path is produced that is pulse free and offers great control, and software actively compares pressure readings in the valves to ensure this smooth flow. A variety of solutions are supported, from those intended for amino acid to those for peptide analysis. Solution composition is fully controllable and allows for up to four solvents to be combined in its gradient proportioning valve. Flow rates can be varied from 50 uL/min to 5 mL/min. Samples are injected into this flow via the sample management system and are held in carousels that accommodate traditionally used 2 ml vials. The sample solutions are then carried to the columns for separation of the solution. Columns are supported in sizes of 2.1 mm (diameter) and larger. Temperature is variable in the column so as to affect separation of solutes, and is provided by the heated column compartment.

A wide range of analyzers for HPLC systems are compatible with the Waters 2795, from dual wavelength to photodiode analyzers (PDA). A variety of configurations are possible to create a functional system, requiring differing detectors or managing systems.
