The Applied Biosystems Q Trap Mass Spectrometer (LC/MS/MS System) is a hybrid, triple quadrupole LIT (linear ion trap) grade mass spectrometer. Unique scanning modalities allow for high-quality data generation and operation. It is especially unique in that the Q3 region can be used as a standard quadrupole mass spectrometer or also in a linear fashion. The scan modes used in both of these configurations can also be linked together in order to produce more of the high-quality data than either mode could provide on its own. The Applied Biosystems Q Trap Mass Spectrometer has the ability to retain the traditional style triple quadrupole types of scans to include: Q1 MS, Q1 Multiple Ion, Q3 MS, Q3 Multiple Ion, Multiple Reaction Monitoring, Precursor Ion, Product Ion and Neutral Loss scans. Additionally, when Q3 functions as an LIT mass spectrometer, additional capabilities include: highly sensitive product ion scanning, fast scanning rates (4000 amu per second), high resolution even at reduced scanning speeds, MS/MS/MS operability and a reduction in overall space charge effects.

The Applied Biosystems Q Trap Mass Spectrometer features enhanced operating modes of operation including:

• Enhanced MS (EMS): Mode where ions are directly transferred from the source and orifice region to the Q3 quadrupole collection point. The ions are then scanned out of Q3 to produce enhanced single-MS type, enhanced spectra. This mode is most helpful when you need a rapidly enhanced sensitivity survey scan.

• Enhanced Resolution (ER): This mode is similar to the Enhanced Product Ion mode, with the exception that the Q1 precursor ions go through the Q2 collision cell without fragmentation. At this point, a small area around the precursor mass is scanned out of Q3 at a very slow rate, producing a view of the spectra.

• Time Delayed Fragmentation (TDF): Product ions are generated and collected in Q3 while the lower mass ions are not collected in Q3. During the following collection phase, all masses that occur over the range of interest are collected. The resultant enhanced product ion spectra are then generalized and simplified, and a comparison is made to EPI scan type spectra to help in the interpretation of the molecular structure and fragmentation pathways.

• Enhanced Product Ion (EPI): Product ions are created by the Q2 collision cell as a result of the precursor ions from Q1 hitting the CAD gas in Q2. The product ions are transmitted and collected in Q3 and then scanned out of Q3. This mode is helpful if you need enhanced resolution and intensity.

• Enhanced Multi-Charge (EMC): This mode operates similarly to the Enhanced MS mode; however, before the ions scan out of Q3, there is a slight delay when the charge state ions are able to preferentially escape out of the Q3 quadrupole.

• MS/MS/MS (MS3): Product ions are generated in the Q2 collision cell by the precursor ions from Q1 colliding with the CAD gas in Q2. The characteristic product ions are then transmitted and collected in Q3. However, it is the secondary product ions of the isolated product ion which result in the end MS/MS/MS product spectra.
