The FlexStation II, manufactured by Molecular Devices, integrates a multi-mode spectrometer with a fluid transfer workstation. Equipping the unit with an automated liquid transfer system facilitates the analysis of rapidly developing assays, including those involving G-coupled receptors or those detected by the rapid influx of calcium ions. Using a pipetting head, the transfer system adds reagents directly to the assay plate, after which the instrument conducts an instant read. Fluidic transfers are run on 96-well microplate formats. This quick sequence of operation, where measurements are taken mere milliseconds before and after liquid transfer, makes analysis of assays involving rapid kinetics possible. The reduced consumption of reagents offers another advantage of this liquid transfer system.
Multiple reading options enable a wide range of possible applications for the FlexStation II. On any microplate format, from 6 to 96 well, the instrument is capable of conducting endpoint, kinetic, lambda and well scan experiments. Scanning modes for the instrument include fluorescence (including time-resolved), absorbance, and luminescence. A specialized photomultiplier tube (PMT) for luminescence ensures accurate reads. The dual monochromator optical bench design provides a wide range of wavelength options for any scanning mode. Wavelength ranges are available from 200 to 850 nm for absorbance reads, 360 to 850 nm for fluorescence emission, and 250 to 850 nm for fluorescence photometric excitation. For any mode, multiple wavelengths can be chosen for simultaneous analysis and can be read by both top and bottom read functions by the optical system.
