A rotary evaporator (colloquially known as a rotovap), is an instrument used in chemical and molecular research applications for separating solvents via evaporation. The mechanism of this action is based upon reducing the pressure above a liquid, thus lowering the boiling point of the component liquids within it. This process allows for the removal of solvents while circumventing the need for excessive heating of what are often sensitive solvent-solute mixtures. Applications for rotovaps include: recycling of solvents, extractions, separations, concentration of active agents, powder drying, solvent distillation, etc.

A rotovap system is typically composed of the following components:

  1. A motor unit for rotating the evaporation flask/vial in which the sample is contained.
  2. A vapor duct, which acts as both a vacuum sealed conduit as well as the axis for sample rotation.
  3. A vacuum, which acts to lower the pressure within the evaporator.
  4. A bath (often water) for heating the sample.
  5. A condenser for conducting coolant. This is typically found in either a coil or finger configuration.
  6. A flask which serves to collect condensate and to collect the distilling solvent once it has recondensed.
  7. An automated or mechanical apparatus for removing the evaporation flask from the bath.
