It was reported that one worker’s error led to a massive power outage that swept across Arizona, Southern California and Mexico, left millions of people in the dark and brought major West Coast cities, including our own San Diego, to a standstill.
The outage, which started around 4 p.m. PST, spanned a record setting footprint moving west from Yuma, Arizona to San Diego, as far north as San Clemente, Calif., and as far south as the Baja peninsula in Mexico.
Officials stated that the two reactors at the San Onofre nuclear power plant where shut down automatically, just minutes before the blackout. The sensors detected the change to the power grid – an appropriate safety measure that resulted in more electric shut downs.
This black out shut down area gas stations, the San Diego International Airport , restaurants, stoplights, businesses and most importantly the Biogen Idec equipment auction. The auction will commence around 7:30am PDT on Monday, Sept. 12, 2011.
