Our core management team not only understands the equipment, but knows how to track it, evaluate it and manage an ever-changing inventory. Every BioSurplus core team member has at least 18 years of skilled experience—including operations, scientific instrumentation, biotech, high-tech, and software architecture and development.
Bill VanDeWeghe, President and CEO
Bill VanDeWeghe, President and CEO: Bill joined BioSurplus in June 2016, bringing more than 30 years of management, financial and legal experience. He is dedicated to ensuring that customers benefit and grow their businesses through superb service and maximizing the value of their equipment.
Prior to joining BioSurplus, Bill co-founded and was CEO of a software startup, served as a Managing Director in an investment banking firm, was a shareholder in a law firm, and served as an artillery officer in the Army. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Princeton University, and his law degree at the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary.
Reid Hjalmarson, Vice President of Marketing
Reid joined BioSurplus in 2013, working first as a technical writer before helping to develop a robust digital marketing and branding program for the company. He is committed to the BioSurplus mission of helping scientists remove barriers to their research.
Reid graduated from UC San Diego in 2010 with a BS in Biology. Following a passion for sustainable development, he then completed the EDGE Biofuels program at UCSD, focusing on molecular techniques for the industrialization of algal biofuel. This experience led Reid to pursue a career on the business side of the sciences, where his skillset lends itself to strategic growth.
Adrian Vazquez, Vice President of Auctions
Adrian joined BioSurplus in 2011 as part of our administrative and IT support team. With his keen sense for organization and logistics, he has refined the BioSurplus Auctions platform and ensures that the auction process is seamless for both bidders and clients.
Yvonne Oden, Director of Product Management
Yvonne joined BioSurplus’ product marketing team in 2016. She contributes 15 years of experience in the Life Science industry from biotech, higher education, and academic research. Yvonne oversees the inventory pipeline from acquisition to sales and provides market value to laboratory equipment with help from her first-hand experience at the bench.
Yvonne currently serves on the Southwest Wetlands Interpretative Association (SWIA) Board of Directors and is an active member of Women in Bio, Association of Women in Science, Society of Military Spouses in STEM, and Athena. She earned her BS in Animal Science from Michigan State University and her MS in Biology from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi.
Ernie Bejarano, Operations Manager
Ernie has been with BioSurplus since 2010 and manages the operations and service departments. Under his supervision, our equipment is transported safely and efficiently all over the world. With a varied working background from realtor to restaurant manager, Ernie coordinates logistics for auction fulfillment and laboratory closures with exceptional flexibility and creativity to meet our clients’ needs.
